TITAN Zlatna Panega Held a Training on "Biodiversity and Invasive Species" for Students

14.05.2025

On 14 May 2025, TITAN Zlatna Panega organized a training session for students on the topic "Biodiversity and Invasive Species." The event took place in the eco-park established in 2024 through volunteer work, located on the territory of the Zlatna Panega quarry. Students from “Vasil Levski” Primary School in Oreshene village and “Hristo Botev” Primary School in Rumyantsevo village participated. Specialists from the company’s Environmental Protection Department introduced the children to the local protected species and the negative impact of the invasive alien species on Bulgaria’s national biodiversity.

The participating students were between the ages of 10 and 13, demonstrating the company’s commitment to involving even the community's youngest members in its initiatives. The children learned about the protected species that bloom in May, such as some of the local orchid varieties. As part of a game, the students had to find specific plants—including orchids native to the region—and label them with informational tags.

“We thank all participants for their contribution and commitment to environmental protection! It is important to us not only to support biodiversity in the area but also to educate and inspire the youngest to love and protect nature from an early age,” said Ivanina Chuilkova, Environmental Protection specialist at TITAN Zlatna Panega.

About the Training

During the training, the experts of TITAN Zlatna Panega presented the topic of the so-called "important orchid habitats" – grasslands that are a priority habitats for conservation throughout the European Union. They are found in the area of the cement plant of TITAN Zlatna Panega and are subject to conservation in the Karlukovo protected area. The company takes systematic care for the conservation and restoration of these habitats, incl. with the identification of appropriate measures against invasive alien plant species. As a reward for participating in the educational game, the children received chocolate treats and pencils attached to paper holders embedded with seeds.

What’s Next

In 2025, the TITAN Zlatna Panega team planted several native plant species in the ecopark, including downy oak (Quercus pubescens), liverwort (Anemone hepatica), ivy-leaved cyclamen (Cyclamen hederifolium), and Kovachev's broom (Chamaecytisus kovacevii)—a Bulgarian endemic species listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria as a protected and endangered plant.

Two insect hotels are planned to be built in the fall, again with the help of children from the region. These will provide habitat for various wild bee species and other pollinators characteristic of the area.

Environmental protection and biodiversity conservation are among TITAN Zlatna Panega's strategic priorities. The company is developing a comprehensive program for building sustainable local communities and has established long-term partnerships with regional educational institutions.
