The new ecopark of Zlatna Panega Cement AD

02.08.2024

On July 18 this year, TITAN Zlatna Panega Cement launched its new project in the field of biodiversity. The initiative is the result of the joint efforts and work of colleagues from the Environmental Protection and Quarry departments and nearly 50 volunteers - employees of the company and contractors, took part in it on the ground.

What was done; Within the framework of the project, the volunteers built an artificial lake to provide water for wild animals during the dry and hot summer months. The goal is to make the water body home to some waterfowl species of the local flora and fauna. It is planned that the lake will be filled mainly with rainwater, and in dry periods it will be replenished with water from a local water source.

The volunteers in the initiative had the task of setting up a small recreation area in the around the lake with benches and information boards that they could assemble by hand. The idea of the information boards is to draw people's attention to the unique geomorphological forms of the area and the rich biodiversity represented there.

What's next: It is planned to plant some plant species typical for the region, such as hairy oak, linden, including Kovachev's zanovets (Chamaecytis kovachevii), a Bulgarian endemic included in the Red Book of Bulgaria as a protected species threatened with extinction. It is also planned to build "insect hotels" and bird feeders with the help of children from the schools in the area. This would create conditions for the accommodation of some species of wild bees and other pollinators, as well as birds typical for the area.

It is planned to place photo traps near the lake, the purpose of which is to monitor the animal species that will visit the lake and possibly the appearance of new ones attracted by the new water source. In the newly established recreation area, future environmental initiatives and trainings of children from the settlements around the plant will be held.

"We thank all participants for their contribution and commitment to environmental protection! It is important for us that we manage not only to support the biodiversity in the area, but also to have fun together." - said Ekaterina Shilegarska, Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection Manager at TITAN Zlatna Panega. The cement plant of TITAN Zlatna Panega is located near one of the most beautiful karst regions of Bulgaria with emblematic karst formations and rich biodiversity. Near the plant is the Karlukovo protected area, famous for its orchid-rich grass and shrub communities on limestone, which are home to many animals. Environmental protection and biodiversity is one of the strategic topics of TITAN Zlatna Panega. The company develops an in-depth program for building sustainable local communities and has built long-term partnerships with educational institutions in the region.
